System design and implementation

Building a bespoke Patient Management System

The client

Dial-a-doctor (https://www.dial-a-doctor.com.au/) is a locum service operating in WA. They offer at-home bulk-billed consultations within three hours of being booked. At the time of Insight’s engagement this was a rapidly developing start-up company

Challenges

With no off-the-shelf solutions available to meet the business’s needs, a custom patient management system (PMS) needed to be developed and deployed to provide a unique range of business-critical functions, including:

  • Integration with Medicare and Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA)
  • Ability to display patient addresses and location of mobile crews on a map
  • Single customer view
  • Secure messaging of patients’ records, etc.

Solutions

Insight was engaged to design the system and oversee its development, implementation and management. Working in daily contact with company owners, a prototyped system was designed to ensure it fully met all business requirements and had an intuitive user interface.
After completing the system design, Insight then assisted the client to engage reliable offshore developers and project-managed successful system implementation.

Detailed wireframes and use cases developed at system design stage were a key success factor because programmers knew exactly how system modules and screens would interact with each other, which minimised the amount of re-work.

Outcome

The PMS was delivered at a fraction of the price of what it would normally cost to develop a system of this complexity.
Following system implementation, Dial-a-doctor then engaged Insight for several years to assist in implementing additional functionality using staged system release management.

The company was eventually sold to a private equity firm at significant profit to company owners. The PMS was considered one of Dial-a-doctor’s key business assets. The original owners have now developed a similar business in the USA and have engaged our services once again.
